Understanding California AB488 rules - what does it mean for donors?

California recently passed a law called AB488 (the Charitable Solicitation Registration Act) to strengthen protections for people donating to nonprofits online.

What does it mean for me?

  • Stronger protections: To comply with AB488, Goodstack can only show U.S. nonprofits that are listed on certain government-approved registries. This means that some organizations you care about may not be currently available to receive donations.
This protection only applies when making a donation, you can still contribute with your time by getting involved with a volunteering opportunity.
  • Disclosure of claim status: When browsing eligible nonprofits, you’ll see whether each organization has claimed their profile and enrolled to receive donations.
You can still donate to unclaimed organizations. They will be notified about any pending donations and instructions on how to enroll with Goodstack so that they can receive funds more easily.
